Building Communities in Manitoba,
Saskatchewan and Alberta
About Us
Matthewson & Co. is a rural-focused social enterprise built for one purpose: helping small communities shape a strong and stable future. We work with municipalities under 5,000 because that is where our experience matters most, and where practical support can make a real difference. Small towns deserve expert help that understands their size, their pace, and the realities they face every day.

Our story begins with our founder, Lorri Matthewson, who has spent her career working inside rural municipalities across the Prairies. With an MBA in Community Economic Development and decades of hands-on experience, Lorri saw a clear gap between what Councils are expected to deliver and the tools they actually have. She built Matthewson & Co. to close that gap with plain‑language guidance, strong governance support, and practical economic development tools that fit small‑population communities.
Lorri is known across the Prairies for her straightforward approach. She translates complex legislation, governance systems, and planning requirements into clear steps that Councils can use. Her work is grounded in evidence, legislation, and real rural practice—not theory,
not guesswork, and not “how we’ve always done it.” Matthewson & Co. operates as a for‑profit social enterprise because rural communities don’t need charity; they need competence, consistency, and honest support.
Our team has grown over the years, bringing new strengths and new perspectives: Anna joined the firm in 2020 and quickly became a key part of our work. With a Business Management diploma and ongoing degree studies, she leads our grant writing and project coordination. In 2023 alone, she secured more than $7 million for municipal projects. Anna also coordinates our webinars, contracts, marketing, bursary inquiries, and day‑to‑day service needs.

Jennifer joined us in 2025 as our Executive Assistant in the Boissevain office. She brings more than 15 years of administrative experience and over a decade of program and event coordination. Jennifer has worked in the non‑profit sector managing staff teams and organizing major events, and she now leads the planning of several Matthewson & Co. events and initiatives.
Together, we offer practical, affordable services that fit the realities of rural governance: council training, policy and bylaw development, asset management planning, facilitation, project support, grant writing, and clear tools that help communities move forward. We do not offer cookie‑cutter solutions. Every community has its own pressures, politics, assets, and blind spots—and our work reflects that. Matthewson & Co. is steady, honest, and built for small communities that are ready to grow. When a municipality is serious about long‑term sustainability, we are the partner who helps them get there.
